เครื่องพิมพ์บาร์โค้ดแบบ Thermal Transfer Printer ใช้ความร้อนในการละลายสารเคลือบพิมพ์ริบบอน เพื่อให้ไปติดอยู่บนตัวสติ๊กเกอร์ ซึ่งเครื่องพิมพ์ประเภทนี้จะได้รับความนิยมมากกว่าเครื่องพิมพ์แบบ Direct Thermal เพราะข้อมูลต่างๆที่อยู่บนตัวสติ๊กเกอร์จะอยู่ได้ทนทาน นานกว่า นอกจากนี้เครื่องพิมพ์บางเครื่องยังสามารถรองรับการทำงานได้ทั้ง 2 ระบบ
เครื่องพิมพ์บาร์โค้ดแบบ Direct Thermal Printer ไม่มีการใช้หมึกพิมพ์ริบบอน แต่จะใช้ความร้อนทำปฏิกิริยากับสารเคมีบนตัวสติ๊กเกอร์โดยตรงเพื่อให้เกิดข้อความต่างๆ ซึ่งเครื่องพิมพ์ประเภทนี้มีข้อจำกัด ต้องใช้กระดาษสติ๊กเกอร์แบบ Direct Thermal เท่านั้น และข้อมูลบนตัวสติ๊กเกอร์จะหายไปตามกาลเวลาเร็วกว่า สติ๊กเกอร์แบบใช้เครื่องพิมพ์ Thermal Transfer
